Attention! All wanna-be rock stars! Australian scientists have developed a high-tech T-shirt that turns the strumming on an air guitar into music. The T-shitr is equiped with built-in motion sensors in the elbows that detect arm movements and relay them wirelessly to a computer that interprets them as guitar riffs. The sensors on one arm interprets the chord-picking, while the other detects strumming. This wearable shirt is adaptable to both right and left-handed would-be rock stars.
“It’s an easy-to-use, virtual instrument that allows real-time music making – even by players without significant musical or computing skills. It allows you to jump around and the suond generated is just like an original mp3.” — Dr. Richard Helmer
This high-tech shirt represents a collaboration between CSIRO researchers in computing, chemistry, electronics, music composition, and textile manufacture. Some other applications include using the feedback from these sensors for better computer graphic simulations or sporting technique improvements.
